The challenge of managing modern networks will require using advanced network management systems to succeed. 

FREMONT, CA: One of the most interesting areas in networking is the networking edge. According to a report, by 2030, the edge economy will be worth 4.1 trillion dollars. The implications for network management are enormous. IT will not only manage LANs, Wi-Fi, VPN connections, and other traditional tasks but also monitor, maintain and manage edge devices and mini-data centers.

Telco companies are investigating edge data centers for sending data to a local, centralized location, summarizing it, and storing it. The safety and efficiency of self-driving vehicles will also require massive amounts of edge services. The Internet of Things (IoT) is also a factor to consider. The Internet of Things is adding billions of new connections to global networks. This requires massive edge processing. 

The complexity of networks, the evolution of the edge, and the emergence of the Internet of Things have made it increasingly evident that one company cannot do everything. Network management vendors partner with edge and IoT specialists. Networking vendors and IT vendors are forming tighter relationships as networks evolve. The edge, IoT, and other data are driving businesses to seek all the help they can get. 

Most network management systems are designed to manage devices and how they are served. Devices provided the service as long as they were running. Virtualization, cloud computing, and edge computing are turning that long-term approach on its head.

A growing number of applications and workloads incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI). But there's a major networking problem. AI systems take too long to connect to edge data. Processing data locally, transferring it to a central AI system, analyzing it, and then transmitting the results might take an hour. 

While it may work for sales forecasts for the next quarter, it fails when dealing with real-time workloads like self-driving cars and fraud detection systems. Changing the networking to enable data to be processed and analyzed as soon as it appears is necessary. This is rather than being transmitted to a central data center. Data centers with high processing power are everywhere at the edge.
