Corporations widely prefer serverless computing because of its versatile functions. Serverless computing doesn’t follow the conventional method of IaaS; instead, the client would pay only for the utilized functions. From developers and operators point of view the practice of serverless computing might improve efficiency, but from a security provider point of view, the method is quite challenging and non-conceivable.
Serverless computing is new to many institutions, and the security providers are yet to familiarize with the functions and gain experience. The security professional must thoroughly understand the working of serverless computing. To understand the model it requires the professional to fully know the framework and how the organization will be using the model. According to the new stacks, 2018 survey half of the participated companies were implementing serverless in their organization, and up to 28 percent were willing to implement serverless in their organization. There are various issues around serverless computing like portability, application, and control. Top serverless preferred solutions are Azure functions (43 percent), AWS lambda (71 percent), and Amazon cloud watch; Amazon web services take the lead in terms of familiarity. Since the functioning is dependent on the third party, the reliability and loss of control are in question. The third-party organization has to manage various clients; so, a timely response is not expected. Sometimes limiting resource usage can affect the company’s performance. The security and debugging can be a little confusing with serverless computing. The services run in the public cloud and thus, personalized upgrading options are also not available.
Serverless computing allows to handpick the required function and gives customized feel required for the business. Multi-cloud computing is possible, but the flexibility of function varies across servers. Redundancy factor is taken care effectively by serverless computing because it can automatically switch and scale across multiple zones even when there is a regional outage. The multi-cloud can be a more comfortable option if data can be shared across different providers and adaptable in various platforms. The industry is striving to make the user-centric software tool a reality. Giants like Amazon and Microsoft are trying to improvise and create highly customizable hybrid clouds.
